Help Us Help Them

As many of you are aware, my blog usually consists of nothing more than my average daily life. No matter how unorganized and chaotic it may seem, it’s life. However, today I come to you with a very important request. So, here goes..

Since moving to the island I have been introduced to the most painful feeling that I never felt in all my travelling of the States. Animal Cruelty. This is a serious problem here on the island. There is a beach in the Southeastern corner of the Island called Dead Dog Beach. Yes, it’s true, that’s the name of it. That’s what people think of it too. Here, there isn’t much education and awareness for animal rights, cruelty or other related issues. People dump dogs here on the beaches and in the forest, they poison them with whatever they have handy and just plain don’t care. This problem is out of control.

In a town called Barceloneta, last October, the mayor thought that it would be a grand idea to gather city workers to round up the stray dogs and hurl them off a 50 foot overpass. The dogs that survived the fall were left for dead. You can read the NY Times article here http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/09/us/09dogs.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=Barceloneta+Puerto+Rico&st=nyt&oref=slogin . This was a travesty.

The mayor and the governor of Puerto Rico don’t think that the people are responsible for this. They think that it’s the animal’s fault. They have gone as far as punishing those who give food to stray and homeless dogs.

Many people think of the Caribbean and think of a set of beautiful islands, surrounded with big blue crystal clear oceans. This may be part of it, but for you tourists who think that this is all there is to it, you are sadly mistaken. There is a darkness here. One filled with hurt and pain and anger.

In San Juan, there is a population of 50 or so cats that roam the city. The cats were set free, with spaying/neutering and all of their vaccines to control the rat problem. Now, the city of San Juan want to inhumanely kill every roaming cat in the city. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help us stop this.
